Preserving Pristine Waters: The Crucial Importance of Cleaning Up the Great Lakes

Image
By Bryce Beilhartz The Great Lakes, a vast expanse of freshwater that spans the North American continent, are not just a natural marvel; they are vital to the well-being of ecosystems, communities, and the broader environment. However, the increasing presence of pollution and debris poses a significant threat to the health of these iconic lakes. In this blog post, we will delve into the importance of cleaning up the Great Lakes, exploring the ecological, economic, and societal reasons that make this endeavor absolutely crucial. Dive into the menace of waste in the great lakes

Image
By Bryce Beilhartz The Great Lakes, a vast and awe-inspiring natural wonder, are facing an increasingly ominous threat: trash. The five interconnected lakes—Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie, and Ontario—hold about 84% of North America's fresh surface water and play a crucial role in supporting diverse ecosystems. However, the beauty of these lakes is marred by the growing problem of pollution, with plastic waste, industrial byproducts, and other debris infiltrating their waters. In this blog post, we will explore the issue of trash in the Great Lakes, its impact on the environment, and the urgent need for collective action. The Great Lakes, though immense, are not immune to the pervasive problem of trash. Human activities, ranging from improper waste disposal to industrial runoff, contribute to the growing volume of debris in these pristine waters. Plasticosis: New Threat to Birds by Gaspar.F

Image
In a recent study, scientists discovered a new disease called "plasticosis" affecting wild birds due to plastic pollution. The disease, caused by ingesting small plastic pieces, inflames birds' digestive tracts, leading to scarring that hinders their ability to digest food and survive. With an estimated 30 million tons of plastic waste in oceans and rivers globally, urgent action is needed to combat the pervasive threat of plasticosis and protect our feathered friends.      The study, conducted by scientists from Australia and the UK, highlights that small pieces of plastic cause inflammation in the digestive tract, resulting in scarring of tissue. The severity of damage was focused to the proventriculus organ, the first part of a bird's stomach, and there was a correlation between the amount of plastic ingested and increased damage to this crucial organ. The tissue of their stomachs heals so rapidly that the tissue scars over the plastic, permanently ...
